Do you make prayer harder than it needs to be? Perhaps you find yourself at a loss for words. Or you’re bored with hearing your voice repeat the exact words over and over again. Maybe it’s time for a simple new way to approach God.
Of course, the most crucial part of prayer is spending time getting to know the Lord, not a specific formula. What works for you?
However, it can often help to approach God by using a particular method. Sometimes when my world turns upside down and words are hard to find—using an acronym to pray can help tremendously. It gives me a place to start that doesn’t begin with requests. The truth is I love this technique and use it daily. It is easy to remember, and it reminds me that trust is the foundation of my relationship with God. It is where I need to begin and end.

How to Approach God Using T.R.U.S.T.
T – Thanksgiving
Purposely express three things to God you are grateful for right now. Did you know expressing thankfulness can help cultivate an attitude of gratitude?
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High.
R – Repent
It is crucial to our relationship with Jesus to express our remorse and regret and seek forgiveness. Yes, unfortunately, we all sin, but the good news is we don’t have to stay stuck in our wrongdoings. God is full of grace.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
U – Uplift Your Requests
The Lord desires us to ask Him for what we need and want, not only for others but for us too.
I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
S – Sit Still with God
Listening is a crucial ingredient in any relationship. So it makes sense we must slow down and hear what God has to say to grow our intimacy with Him.
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
T – Take Hold of God
Now let’s end our prayer time by stating our desire to take hold of God and press on with the day. We can allow Him to be the master of our day.
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

I haven’t heard this particular acronym for prayer, but I sure like it! I think the part I am concentrating on right now is the being still before God. It’s easy for me to pray on the go, but being still and listening is just as important. Thanks for the reminder, Maree

Jeanne, Thank you for your encouragement. I am right there with you. My biggest struggle is being still before God and listening to Him. Maree
I learned to pray this way using trust in a small group . I had never heard it before or used it. But it is handy and reminds me that I don’t need to have everything figured out before I pray.
Theresa,
I would love to know the details around the way your small group used the T.R.U.S.T. acronym. Did they choose the same words I did for each letter? I had never heard it used before. Thank you for sharing your experience with using trust.

Love this! And thanks so much for the feature!
You are so welcome. I loved your prayers. Maree
I’ve never heard of the TRUST acronym before, thanks for sharing!
Lisa,
You are so welcome. I hope you received the workbook that came out on March 23rd. I created the acronym a few years ago out of a need to incorporate some key elements into my prayer life. The idea was to come up with a new one each year, but this one stuck. Thank you for your comment. Maree
You’re right, an acronym does help our thoughts not to wander in prayer. This looks like a good one.
Barbara, Thank you! I know I have loved using this acronym. My original plan was to create a new one every few years, but this one stuck. I hope your week has been good so far. I’m so glad you are a part of Grace & Truth. I always look forward to your comments. Maree
