Do you ever find yourself exhausted and depleted from doing God’s work? Do you think that is part of His plan? Perhaps the toil will be hard on some days, but when it seems to be a pattern in your life, maybe it is time to ask yourself, is there a better way to serve God?
In my life, many times, I start focused precisely on what God has in mind, but before long, I have turned it into something entirely different. I have taken the one task the Lord asked of me and added a million more. Then when I fall at His feet worn out, I hear His sweet whisper, “Maree, no wonder you feel drained; what you are doing is not what I had in mind.”
Do you ever struggle with taking God’s original plan and turning it into something more that leaves you exhausted?
A Better Way to Serve God
The best way to serve God is His way! #serve #servingGod #God Share on XIn one of my favorite books – “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World,” Joanna Weaver tells a story about a man pulling a wagon up the hill. His cart becomes cumbersome and overloaded by his own doing. It is a story I carry with me, and I hope you will too. Click here to read it.

Debbie Wilson piqued my interest last week in her post. She demonstrated how a change in a word could make a massive difference in how we serve God. She asks and answers the question, “What’s better than working for Jesus?”

This post made me stop and think, Maree. It’s easy to become overcommitted. And like you, God gives me something to do, and somehow I am an expert at adding my vision to His simple instruction and getting worn out trying to achieve it all. Thanks for the reminder to take a step back, evaluate, and pray for God’s (re)direction before continuing forward.
Jeanne,
I am so glad to know I am not alone. I do have a habit of overcommitting at times. God really does usually make it simple, but I turn into more. However, I am getting better.
Maree
Maree, we were just talking about his in our small group. Working for God and working with God. When we work with God we don’t have to worry about missing something, having the right answer, or failing, because we are working with Him. He is doing the heavy lifting. Not us. It is not all on our shoulders, but on His. What a freeing concept.
Theresa,
I love it when God speaks from many angles about the same thing. Your words are a treasure. I do want to let God do the heavy lifting.

I hear what you’re saying, Maree. At the beginning of 2020, I was feeling overwhelmed with all the things I had been volunteering to do. I was debating what could be stopped. And then they all stopped. I’m not sure which ones I will pick back up once they reopen…I pray I will hear what God wants me to do, not just what I want (or don’t want) to do.
Lisa,
Sending a prayer that you hear exactly what God wants you to pick up. It is hard. So many good things to choose from. Maree
oh yes Maree, I can relate to this post, many times in my relationship with God have I turned what I thought was His will into my own workings!
I’m so glad we have such a gracious Lord!
bless you,
Jennifer
Jenniffer, I too am glad we have a gracious Lord. It is also nice to know I am not alone. Maree
Maree, I have turned God’s original plan into something else many times in the past due to people pleasing. I’m finally getting the awareness I need to step out of that. It’s taken a long time. I can really relate to what you write here. Thank you for sharing this. I’ll head over to Debbie’s post!
Leslie,
Yes, you bring up a good thought. Why do we do it? I would have to say my perfectionism and people-pleasing take the lead. But I am getting better. You are right awareness helps. Maree
Thank you, Maree, for sharing my post. I enjoyed the story of the man filling his wagon with other people’s loads. So easy to do. Blessings!
Thank you for linking up such a great post. I’m glad you like the wagon story. I think about it all of the time. Blessings, Maree
it’s so easy to focus on the “stuff” we’re doing for Him instead of looking to Him directly. Thanks for this reminder to check my focus and emphasis.
Oh, I need the reminder daily. I hope you are having a great week. Maree
