Do you ever stop to ponder how looking in the right direction can help bring peace that fuels you on to embrace the unexpected? This week, Lois Flowers stopped me in my tracks to consider – am I looking up enough? Not only to God but in my everyday life.
Two Examples of How Looking in the Right Direction Will Help
1. Looking to God
Over the last few months, I have had the opportunity to do a bit of hiking in the beautiful state of Utah. I have been mesmerized by the beauty of God’s creation. As I step out into His handiwork, my eyes and thoughts go right to Him. And yes, even my gaze goes upward. Joy bursts from my soul when I am out in nature. It automatically brings gratitude to the center of my heart and a sense of peace, which is unexplainable. There is a skip in my step as I go about my day knowing God loves me, and He is near.
However, the mountain top feeling doesn’t last forever unless we keep looking up
As the day progresses, my eyes tend to shift down to the tasks at hand. Oh, I may start my morning with my eyes toward God; however, that darn device I call my phone gets most of my glances. And the computer hums all day, beckoning me to look at one more thing.
Think about it for a second – how many times do you look at your phone on a given day? Now, count how many times do you look up to Jesus? No wonder a sense of overwhelm creeps into our lives so quickly!
2. Does Looking in the Right Direction Help Relationships?
Let’s continue with those darn devices that rapidly bring us information, disrupt our moments, and many times interfere with our relationships. How does it feel when you spend time with other people, and their eyes frequently dart to the device in their hands? Do you feel loved and important? I certainly don’t, and yet that is what I do all too often.
Looking down continuously at our phones becomes a habit, but what does it convey to the people we love or to the God who loves us?
Now, I’m not suggesting we go rogue and abandon our phones and computers. However, maybe a little awareness of where our eyes are gazing might be worthwhile.
