When it comes to life here on earth, what is the most important thing to you? If you answered relationships, you and I are on the same path. I love God and people. However, I have found one massive relationship stopper, and it’s hard to quit doing without a conscious effort and practice.

We humans naturally tend to form opinions and judgments about everything. These thoughts can be extremely problematic in relationships when we insist on spewing them out. Share on X
“Even a fool may be thought of as wise when his mouth is kept shut.” Proverbs 17:28

This week our featured post by Theresa Boedeker does a marvelous job of showing why our opinions can be problematic. It is worth reading.

Years ago, I learned two motto’s, to say silently to myself,  which serve to be valuable reminders when in the midst of a tough conversation.

“The relationship is the most important thing.”
“Do I want to be right or effective?”

I admit there are times when my pride swells up, and being right becomes paramount. However, the results are never satisfying for anyone. Many times I have even erected a great wall with God because I held to my opinion that God should have intervened, and He didn’t.

What is the most important thing to you? If your answer is relationships read on to find out one massive relationship stopper, and it's hard to quit doing.

Of course, we are still going to have our opinions, but holding on to them tightly and spitting them on everyone else is definitely problematic. I hope you will click over to Theresa’s post and read our featured article today.

  1. Yes, this life is all about relationship especially our relationship with God! Our tongue though can get in the way of this…being mindful of our opinions v God’s wisdom in the moment is a constant learning curve. Isn’t it Maree…
    Blessings,
    Jennifer

    1. Oh, that could be hard to tame. But I can’t imagine you being anything but hospitable, kind, and loving. Thank you for sharing. Maree

  2. Thanks for featuring my post, Maree. I remember a therapist talking about arguing. She said something I often remind myself. “You may wind the argument, but the relationship will lose.” Yup, choose the relationship over proving that you are right.

    1. Theresa, It was an honor to feature your article. I like what you learned from a therapist, “You may win the argument, but the relationship will lose.” Thank you for sharing it. I applied it to a conversation today. Maree

  3. I remember being so convicted when Elisabeth Elliot used to talk about making an idol of “being right.” She lamented (even in her advanced spiritual maturity) her tendency to argue a small point with her husband just because of that idolatry.
    Phew.
This is a big one for me, as well.

    1. Yes, it is a big one for me too. But I am learning. I never thought about making an idol out of “being right.” But I see the truth in it. Thank you for speaking to this topic. Maree

  4. There are some convictions to hold onto unwaveringly–Jesus is the Son of God, the Bible is true and trustworthy, salvation is by grace through faith, etc. But even those we can express kindly. And the vast majority of other things, there’s room enough for a variety of opinions. Much truth in this post, thank you!

    1. Barbara – Yes, absolutely, we can express our convictions kindly. Thank you for adding your thoughts and convictions. I am right there with you. Blessings, Maree
