Do you do things out of selfish ambition? Don’t be so quick to answer “no.” Sometimes when you dig a little deeper you see our motives are not so virtuous.
Last week Lois Flowers announced her word for the year. It is “humble.” What a brave soul! I loved reading her post about the meaning of humble. A few explanations might surprise you.
“To me, a humble person is someone who is not proud. That might seem obvious, but pride manifests itself in many ways, some more subtle than others.” Lois Flowers
In reading her article, I definitely saw some areas in my own life where God might want me to show a little more humility. I can’t tell you how many times I have dug my heels in to prove my thoughts are “right.” However, looking back using the humble approach would have had more impact. Can you relate?
It has been fun discovering what other people choose as their one word, phrase or goal for the year. Mine was announced in my last post, “A Challenge: Get Out of the Boat This Year.” I would love to hear what yours is.

I don’t usually feel like a brave soul, Maree, but I do appreciate your kind words! Thank you for sharing it with the linkup … I’ve already seen how God is beginning to use this word in my life, and in ways I wasn’t really expecting!
Lois, Oh but you are brave to choose the word you did. I can’t wait to hear throughout the year how God is using this word in your life. Blessings, Maree
Lois’s posts ring true for me time and again, Maree. Love that you’ve featured her here.

Jennifer – Thank you!! Maree
I think if we 100% could answer yes to your question, we wouldn’t need Jesus! laurensparks.net
Yes, we need Jesus!
Oh, yes. Humility is difficult sometimes. We all have things we are proud of. The trick is to be able to differentiate between self-serving pride and holy self-confidence. We need to rid ourselves of the “self” to give God’s light room to shine through us.
Laurie – Thank you for adding words of wisdom to the conversation. I like what you had to say, “The trick is to be able to differentiate between self-serving pride and holy self-confidence.” Yes, we do need more of God and less of us. Maree
I so enjoyed reading Lois’ post last week. So good. Thanks for featuring it, Maree. It’s a message we can never read too often.
Heather, Yes, it had me thinking about my desire to be right. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Maree
I loved that post by Lois as well–as writers, we need to be sifting our motives constantly, and often I’m not happy with what I find out about myself.
Michele, I am right there with you. As writers, it is so easy to get consumed with our numbers, or we begin creating content to get us ahead instead of what God would have us write about. Blessings to you, Maree
Leading a neighborhood Bible study along this same thought… Idol Lies by Dee Brestin – amazing what we can’t see in our hearts…
Paris – It sounds like a great study. Thank you for sharing. Maree
