We all need a little bliss in our lives, wouldn’t you say? However, this summer, for many, it seems a little harder to obtain. Maybe the activities we usually do are no longer an option, and it is time to be creative and discover new ways to bring a little delight, laughter, and happiness into our lives. What unexpected joy have you found this summer?
Finding Unexpected Joy in the Following
- Photography—taking pictures of God’s amazing creation
- Sunshine
- Books by Audible
- Walks with God
- Watching the leaves flutter on the trees
- Bird watching turned into bird dodging
The last one might need a little explanation. As I sat in my office, I heard a familiar sound. However, it made no sense. It was a sliding sound and then a boom. Frequently this happens in winter as ice cycles and snow slide down our roof but not in the middle of the summer. I quickly went outside to find a complete mess over our car and driveway. The cute bird nest had dropped and crashed to the ground. I quickly surveyed the grounds in hopes of rescuing any baby birds. Thank goodness all the little ones were able to fly.
As I stood there pondering how to clean it up, something flew straight for my head, and I quickly ducked to avoid impact. Oh my goodness, the birds seemed to be angry at me. For weeks, birds would come out of nowhere and dive at us whenever anyone left the house, and we were frightened to leave home.
You might wonder where the joy was in all this bird dodging! We consistently amused our neighbors and ourselves as we tried navigating an exit without being hit. We wore hats, used umbrellas, and ran fast. Now, the birds are gone, and we can laugh at ourselves.

Here in Australia we have bird dodging with our native Magpies & Pulver’s if we get too close to where their nests are.
Umbrellas with big eyes printed on them are apparently the best course of action! Who would have thought! Lol!
Bless you,
Jennifer
Jennifer,
Well, we might have to get a fancy umbrella for next year. I would never have thought bird dodging was a thing until it happened to us. We looked it up and its quite common.
Oh my goodness! I have also had birds swoop down at me while walking near a nest. Wasn’t doing anything to them, but even as a bird lover and parrot owner, that was a bit scary!
Evidently, birds swooping down is quite common. I am with you; it is a little scary. Maree
I’m sure the neighbors were entertained by watching you dodge birds! I enjoy Audible books, too, as well as flowers, watching Jeopardy with my husband, time with my grandson.
Barbara, I loved hearing about what you are enjoying this summer. Spending time with your grandson must be amazing. He is blessed to have you. Maree
